Disable Google AI
You want to remove the automatically generated AI summaries in Google searches. There is no direct off switch, but three ways to achieve this: use the Web Filter, set 'Google Web' as the default search (udm=14) or, if available, disable the Labs switch for 'AI in Search'. A browser extension can also hide the AI boxes.
Disable AI overviews
To disable the AI overviews in Google searches, you have several methods at your disposal. These range from immediate filters to permanent settings and optional browser extensions.
A) Immediate solution: Use Web Filter (Desktop and Mobile)
This method is the fastest way to hide AI overviews for a single search.
- Perform a Google search as usual.
- Directly under the search bar, tap or click on 'Web'.
- If 'Web' is not visible, click 'More' and select 'Web' there.
The results will show only classic text links; the AI overview will be hidden. This is the official solution from Google to obtain pure link results. Note that the Web Filter also hides other SERP modules such as images or videos, not just the AI box, as .Search Engine Land reports.
B) Permanent solution: 'Google Web' as default (udm=14)
This method allows you to permanently set Google Web as the default search engine, thereby avoiding AI boxes by default. The trick is to to append '&udm=14' to the Google URL, which functionally corresponds to the Web view.
Chrome (Windows/macOS)
- Open Chrome and go to 'Settings'.
- Select 'Search engine' and then 'Manage search engines and site search'.
- Under 'Site search' click 'Add'.
- Enter the following information:
- Name: Google Web
- Shortcut: @web
- URL:
{google:baseURL}search?q=%s&udm=14
- Click the menu next to 'Google Web' in the list and select 'Set as default'. For more information, see the Chrome help article.
Chrome (Android/iOS)
- Perform a Google search to have 'Google Web' detected.
- Open the menu (⋮ or …) and go to 'Settings'.
- Select 'Search engine'.
- Choose 'Google Web' from the 'Recently used' list. This will be set as default, as Android Authority explains.
Firefox (Windows/macOS)
- Open Firefox and go to 'Settings'.
- Select the 'Search' section.
- Under 'Search Shortcuts' click 'Add'.
- Enter the following data:
- Name: Google Web
- URL:
- URL:
https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14
- Click 'Add' and then select it as default. Details can be found in the Mozilla Help.

Google Assistant in use: AI features are often deeply integrated into daily life.
C) Optional: Labs switch (if shown)
Google offers a Labs switch in some regions and accounts to control AI features.
- Sign in to Google.
- Click the Labs icon (beaker) and then 'Manage/Manage'.
- Set 'AI in Search' or 'AI overviews and more' to 'Off'.
This switch is not available in all regions or for all accounts, as in the Google Support.
D) Optional: Browser extension (Hide rather than disable)
If you prefer a simple solution that merely hides the AI blocks, you can use a browser extension.
Install an extension that hides the AI blocks via CSS, e.g., Bye Bye Google AI or Hide Google AI Overviews. These extensions visually hide the AI boxes but do not disable them server-side, as Tom's Hardware reports.

Similar to Bing, AI extensions in Google products can also be disabled in browser settings.
Additional information
Limitations and notes
- There is no global, permanent off switch from Google for AI overviews. The Web Filter is the official solution.
- The Web Filter also hides other SERP modules (images, videos etc.), not just the AI box, as Search Engine Land notes.
- "udm=14" corresponds functionally to the Web view and is a stable workaround to avoid AI overviews. This is supported by Ars Technica and Tom's Guide.
- The trick '-ai' at the end of the query helps only sometimes; better to rely on the Web Filter or udm=14, as Yahoo reports.
Why many want to disable it
- Accuracy: There has been renewed attention to faulty AI answers. Users often prefer verifiable sources over summarized statements, such as Wired highlights.
- Control/Transparency: Many want to see the 'blue links', choose sources themselves and reduce the result surface, like The Verge reports.
- Impact on media: Publishers in Europe criticize possible traffic losses and demand audits. The topic is regulatory in motion, as The Guardian reports.

Disable 'Hey Google & Voice Match' in the Google Assistant settings to block voice activation.
This gives you a quick immediate method (Web Filter), a permanent solution (udm=14 as default), and two options for special cases (Labs switch, extension) to disable AI overviews in Google searches.
